Corey Wilkes Improvised Soul Projekt featuring Kahil El'Zabar
5:30-6:30PM (SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 25) | JAMES WAGNER STAGE
COREY WILKES, trumpeter, burst onto the music scene in 2002 , landing in the heart of the Chicago jazz club scene. Confident in his reach, Corey filled the vacant trumpet seat of Lester Bowie in the Art Ensemble of Chicago. He has shared the stage with Wynton Marsalis, Roy Hargrove, Ledisi, Soulive, James Moody, Meshell Ndegeocello, Mike Phillips, Roscoe Mitchell, Von Freeman, Fred Anderson, Will Calhoun, Malcom Jamal-Warner, among others. He has also performed extensively in Europe as well as Africa, Japan and South America. Reviewing Corey’s CD, Cries From tha Ghetto, Howard Reich observed that Corey moves “fearlessly into avant-garde territory on some tracks, burrowing deeply into bebop and hard-bop traditions [while] on others, he documents the versatility of his art and the range of his imagination.” In the All Music Guide: Michael G. Nastos, calls Corey “a brilliant player, young yet wise beyond his years, and while scratching thesurface, [he] displays plenty of grit, street smarts, and a serious fun attitude, marking him as one of the most promising trumpet players in the 2000s.” Performing with Corey are DE’SEAN JONES, tenor sax; ROBERT “BAABE” IRVING III, keyboards; JUNIUS PAUL, bass; MAKAYA MCCRAVEN, drums; FAREED HAQUE, guitar; and KAHIL EL ZABAR, percussion/chant.
